Helping students access the health care they need

Palmview State Secondary College has been selected to participate in the ‘GPs in Schools Pilot’.

The Pilot is part of the Queensland Government’s Student Wellbeing Package. The initiative is designed to make it easier for young people in Queensland schools to access the healthcare they need.

The Pilot will allow our College to set up a fit-for-purpose GP clinic on school grounds. This clinic will provide students with access to a GP one day each week, during school terms.

Our College Clinic Staff

Our College’s GP will be Dr Richard van Hak, a General Practitioner (GP). Dr Richard is a registered GP in the Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia.

Dr Richard was born in the Netherlands and graduated as a medical doctor in 2009. After 3 years of gaining experience in a variety of positions including surgery, paediatrics and patients with multiple disabilities he commenced training as a General Practitioner. In 2015 he first started working in New Zealand before deciding to further his career in Australia joining Health Hub Doctors Morayfield in 2018.

His areas of expertise and special interests are paediatrics, lung and heart, and musculoskeletal disease.

Away from work Richard has an interest in foreign culture, cycling/mountain biking and often joins his family for bush walks or water activities.

Dr Richard van Hak will be joining us from Health Hub Doctors Morayfield.

What services will the GP provide?

Our College GP clinic will offer secondary students the majority of services that young people are able to access from GPs in the community, including management of physical health, mental health, and sexual and reproductive health issues.

Our college clinic is also open to students from the Palmview State Primary School and the Palmview State Special School.

Will there be a cost for students to see the GP?

All visits to the GP will be provided at no cost to students or their families. The GP will bulk-bill all appointments through Medicare, so it is important that students bring their Medicare Card (or their Medicare number) with them to their appointment.

If students are not eligible to access Medicare, the cost of the appointment will be covered by the College.

If you have any questions or concerns about the College GP clinic, please contact GP@palmviewssc.eq.edu.au or by telephone 5231 5333.
