Work Experience
Overview
Palmview State Secondary College supports students to complete work experience to support their Learning Guarantee.
By completing Work Experience, students can explore jobs and careers that interest them and get an authentic taste of what their future career could be like. It provides real-world insights into the workplace and is an invaluable experience that will help students to explore and navigate their future pathways with confidence.
What does Work Experience look like?
Students must be 14-years old to be eligible to participate in work experience. In a school year, students may complete up to 30 days of work experience. This could include a combination of 1-day per week for a Term or a 5-day block, dependent on individual circumstances.
Students who participate in the work experience program are responsible for ensuring their class work is up to date and assessments are submitted by working with their classroom teachers.
Year 9 Work Experience Program
From Term 3, all Year 9 students will participate in a work readiness program as one of their PLUS time activities. This program allows students to develop transferable employment related skills such as effective communication, planning and organising, and team work. It is also a valuable opportunity to gain insight into a particular industry or occupation that they may have been considering for their future career journey.
As part of this program, all Year 9 students will explore the world of work in the last week of Term 3 - Week 10. Students will identify a career of industry that they want to explore to support them to make decisions about the pathway they want to navigate as they move into Year 10 and senior schooling.
Prior to the work experience program, all students will submit their assessment as per the assessment planner and will have approval from their classroom teachers that their work is up to date.
For all work experience, the Principal or Principal's delegate has the right to decline participation where a student is not demonstrating earned autonomy to undertake the placement safely and respectfully. Students demonstrate earned autonomy through the Palmview State Secondary College core values of trust, connect and grow.
Why is this an important program for students to engage with?
By participating in the PSSC Work Experience Program students will:
- explore different occupations to get firsthand experience in roles and industries that they are interested in
- build on and develop new transferable skills and abilities in new settings, as well as navigating different social understandings, all of which are essential in the world of work
- make informed decisions about their pathway as they navigate their subject selection for Year 10.
Information for students and families about the Year 9 Work Experience Program will be available early in Term 2.
Work Experience for Senior Students
In Years 10, 11 and 12, students will be supported to complete work experience that they have identified in their Learning Guarantee. Decisions about final placement for students in their senior program will be reliant on their effort and behaviour in the curriculum classes.
Students will work directly with the Industry Liaison Officer to prepare their documentation and to finalise arrangements with employers. Final decisions about the days and timing of work experience will be subject to individual circumstances e.g. least impact on a student learning.
